PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- Feb. 24, 2022

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?

Spending a portion of my youth in Arizona, I became addicted to the game and knew immediately that I wanted to make a career out of it and learn as much as I could about the game that I had fallen in love with.

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?

Being able to do what I love for a living is something that my parents always pushed on me. being able to see my family proud of not only the professional I have become, but the human I have become because of it is what makes this the most rewarding career choice I could have made. The continuous opportunities to educate myself and learn is an added bonus.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?

my first job in the industry was in the backshop at Mayfair Lakes, Doug Dobson was the Head Golf Professional, but the shop was filled with talent. Gavin Fitzpatrick, Harvey Chan and Greg Wagstaff were the associate professionals at that time.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?

Not in the industry, I have to say my father Stephen, he pushed me to never be afraid to fail, to always ask questions, and to appreciate change. In the Industry, I would have to say my current Head Professional at Richmond Country Club, Mike Cyndroski. He has pushed me to continue educating myself, to pursue goals, to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to use my creativity as a tool to grow the game of golf.

What career path led you to where you are today?

My entire career as a golf professional has been in the Lower Mainland. Backshop to Apprentice Professional to Class A, to Lead Assistant Professional. I am very proud of where my path has led me today and extremely grateful for every opportunity that has been given to me.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?

Achieving my Class "A" status, and being recognized as one of the Top 100 professionals in the PGA of BC through the PDP program every year since its inception.

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?

Network yourself, don’t be afraid to reach out to other professionals not only in our association, but other associations around the world, you just never know when you will get that call for your dream job.

What is your most cherished golf memory?

The day my father and I took the game of golf up together. this game shaped our relationship and I am forever grateful for that.

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?

bias answer - Richmond Country Club, I absolutely love tree lined, tight fairway, AV Macan designed courses. Non Bias - Fairview Mountain, every single shot you get to hit there is entertaining.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?

That CPGA stands for "Can't Play Golf Anymore". If you feel this way, you need to get better at making time to play the game that you made a career out of.

What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?

I have loved the game of hockey since I was 4 years old, however didn’t put on my first pair of skates until I was 26 years old. I am now on the ice 2-3 nights a week.
