PGA of BC Member Profile - Bruce Vermee
March 16, 2022

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?

My grandfather bought me a 6 iron from the bargain barrel at the Broadmoor golf club when I was 11. I was put to work at the Broadmoor by Ken Matson when i was 12 because i was always there. After a competitive junior career and always hanging out at the golf course I knew early following in Ken and other professionals’ footsteps was what I wanted to do as a career

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?

Working and learning with the professionals I work with on a daily basis and in the Association to provide a great experience to the golfers i am in touch with every day, whether through teaching, or through any of the many hats golf professionals wear.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?

The Broadmoor in Sherwood Park, AB under Ken Matson

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?

Ken Matson, Greg Pidlaski and Irv Taylor - each had different strengths which I have tried to use in my career, but the common denominator was hard work!

What career path led you to where you are today?

After working for 1 year in Leduc with Greg Pidlaski, he asked if I wanted to join him in Kelowna at the KGCC - and I have been here in Kelowna ever since.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?

Being twice voted by my peers as Interior Professional of the year, and also being voted onto the Board by my peers. Also being a stepfather and grandfather - which 15 years ago would have seemed to be something that would have never happened!

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?

Though sometimes it is challenging, always remember how lucky we are to deal with people - be it members, public, students- who CHOOSE to be at a golf course because they love it - not because they have to be there. We should have the same attitude.

What is your most cherished golf memory?

Tough question! There are many but my 1 hole in one sticks out!

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?

Kokanee Springs- so many great memories as a junior travelling there with a friend's family - just a great spot to get away and play a great golf course in a beautiful area

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?

That there is nothing to do in the off season!

What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?

I am a very average guitar player bordering on bad - but it is fun and a great escape
