Steven Lecuyer wins his third straight COBRA PUMA Golf Assistants' Championship
June 11, 2025
Pitt Meadows, BC (PGA of BC) - For 51 years, Gerry Chatelain’s record held firm. The legendary, longtime Head Professional at Capilano Golf & Country Club, Chatelain won the 1972, 1973 and 1974 PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship, the first and, for half a century, only professional to ever pull off the feat. Navigating each pressure-packed situation with poise and a calm, steely focus, Steven Lecuyer (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) captured his third consecutive COBRA PUMA Golf Assistants’ Championship to join Chatelain as the tournament’s only back-to-back-to back champions in its 77-year history.
Lecuyer entered the final round at Meadow Gardens Golf Club tied for the lead with Cory Renfrew (Pacific Golf Academy) after firing a 5-under 67 in Round One. Following his phenomenal performance off the tee in the first round, and with a crowded and fluid leaderboard, Lecuyer remained aggressive. An early birdie on the 2nd was encouraging but at times, his grip on contention felt like it could slip away. He made back-to-back bogeys on the 4th and 5th holes to drop back, while Zac Carson (Nicklaus North Golf Course) and Luke Bogdan (Ace Performance Centre) attacked the course with ferocity. Carson jumped out to an early lead after going birdie-eagle to start his round. Bogdan enjoyed an eight-hole, five-birdie stretch to wrestle the lead from Carson.
Following Lecuyer’s back-to-back bogeys, he proceeded to birdie three of the next four holes and made the turn at 2-under for the day. Meadow Gardens’ back-nine, including the snaking, aquatic behemoth that is the par-5 18th, presented a bevy of challenges and adversity to competitors in Round Two. The back-nine field scoring average for the final round was 0.75 strokes worse than in Round One, demanding an unflappable mental fortitude. Lecuyer delivered on that mental fortitude, as he did in the howling winds of Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course last year, and the pouring rain at Chilliwack Golf Club in 2023.
“I got out of my rhythm on 10, and I three-putted for a bogey. On 12, I made a great up-and-down par to get me going again. I birdied 13, so I felt like I was back and settled,” said Lecuyer.
As a collection of top contenders’ resolves were challenged through the final stretch of the championship, Lecuyer remained stoic and patient. With a par on the 18th, he finished at 7-under overall for a three-stroke victory.
“It’s really special to be able to win a tournament three times in a row. I’m feeling very grateful for the opportunity to play and to come out on top on this difficult golf course,” said Lecuyer. “It was a very up-and-down day; I fought hard and came back a couple times.”
Zac Carson and Matthew Daniel (Savage Creek Golf Club) tied as runners-up at 4-under. Point Grey Golf & Country Club’s Clark MacPherson (-3) finished in fourth, while Luke Bogdan and John Shin (Northview Golf & Country Club) tied for fifth at 2-under.
The PGA of BC extends its gratitude to Title Sponsor COBRA PUMA Golf, Sales Representative Hugh Chan and Master Fitter Brian Miller for their generous and unwavering support of the Assistants’ Championship, which has allowed the Association to grow the field and enhance the event. The PGA of BC selected one hole each day of the event, and all competitors who made a birdie on that hole were entered into a draw to win a pair of PUMA Golf Arnold Palmer Royale Wingtip Golf Shoes. Congratulations to Noah Dube (Pitt Meadows Golf Club) and Clark MacPherson for being drawn as the winners of the shoes.
The Association also extends its appreciation to Supporting Sponsor Hoyne Brewing for their presence and distribution of complimentary Hoyne Brewing beer to competitors post-round.
Thank you to Referees Kathy Chen, Ron Humeny, Jonathon Dugdale and Frances Raphael for their hard work and assistance. We also thank all volunteers who graciously donated their time to help support the championship.
