NANAIMO, BC (PGA of British Columbia) – The Point Grey Golf & Country Club team of Head Professional Dave Zibrik and amateur Jeff Dagg successfully defended their title by capturing the 2022 PGA of BC Tournament of Champions presented by PING Canada in a playoff on Monday at Nanaimo Golf Club.

Zibrik and Dagg made a par on three consecutive playoff holes in the alternate-shot format to outlast the team from Victoria Golf Club of Lindsay Bernakevitch and Peter Jawl. Both teams posted 18-hole scores of 4-under-par 68 in the 2-person best ball format.

“It feels great to repeat as champions. This is such a fun event to be able to come play and Jeff is such a good player,” said Zibrik. “The golf course was exceptional and we are happy we played well enough for the win.”

The Tournament of Champions is a unique team event in which PGA of BC Club Professionals (Head, Executive & Head Teaching Professionals) pair up with a club champion or other designated amateur from their facility to compete against teams from across the province. Thirty-five teams vied for the title on Monday at the historic Nanaimo Golf Club.

Zibrik and Dagg’s round consisted of six birdies to just two bogeys that saw varying weather conditions  throughout the course of play. Playing with the host Club (Chris Wilson & Al Jensen), Point Grey G&CC closed out their round with three birdies over their last five holes.

Zibrik earned $1,000 for the win while Dagg was awarded the top amateur prize, a set of PING i525 irons.

While starting on the 18th hole playing behind Point Grey in the shotgun format, the team from Victoria Golf Club bogeyed their opening hole but did not have any further blemishes on their scorecard for the remainder of the round. They managed to birdie their final three holes to sneak into the playoff.

Bernakevitch, a two-time past champion of this event (2015, 2017), cashes $850 for their second place finish while Jawl takes home a PING G425 Max Driver.

A four-way tie at 2-under par saw Chilliwack Golf Club (Ryan Tofani & Mike McGimpsey), Royal Colwood Golf Club (Richard Chlopan & Kevin Carrigan), Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club (Ashley Zibrik & Will Eddy), and Fairview Mountain Golf Club (Brian McDonald & Corey Hilditch) tie for third place. Each professional earns $556.25 while their respective amateur partners take home a piece of the over $6,500 prize table, mostly featuring PING Canada products.

All professionals whose teams finished among the top 18 earned a piece of the $6,000 Professional purse.

Having recently celebrating their centennial anniversary and last hosting a PGA of BC event 25-years ago (1997 PGA of BC Championship), Nanaimo Golf Club were a fantastic first-time host of the Tournament of Champions. The PGA of BC wishes to acknowledge host Head Professional Chris Wilson, Superintendent Garth Sjolie and the entire team and membership at Nanaimo Golf Club for their tremendous hospitality in welcoming our Professional and amateur competitors.

Finally, the PGA of BC thanks PING Canada for its ongoing support of the Association through the always popular Tournament of Champions. Please click here to view complete results. Photos from the event can be found by clicking here.
