PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- June 9, 2021
Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
I've been involved in the game since I was 10 and was "hired" by Al MacKenzie at the Penticton G&CC. Basically my dad thought it would be a great way to keep me out of trouble as my teen years approached. I loved being at the Golf Course and as I grew up I knew one day I wanted to be just like the Professionals I looked up to when I was young...
What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
The people! Our Industry is tighter than any other and it is such a privilege to meet so many great people along the way. Playing Events, attending Seminars, there are just so many opportunities to network and create life long friendships!
At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
Penticton G&CC / Al MacKenzie
Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Mike Parker, former Head Professional at Victoria GC. I was so young at the time and working under Mr. Parker taught me so much about my ensuing career, but more importantly about how to be an excellent PROFESSIONAL and person. Many lessons I learnt I still fall back on today!
What career path led you to where you are today?
I began pushing a broom, worked up to picking the Range, cleaning Clubs, and finally making it into "The Shop". After 9 years as Head Professional at Gallagher's Canyon I was looking for a change. The opportunity to work with my friend Mark Lindsay as independent Sales Representatives was exciting. it is a rewarding career working with my colleagues to try and make their businesses the best they can be!
Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
Mentoring young Professionals who have gone onto their own HP, HTP, and GM roles. Multiple nominations for Professional of the Year in the Interior Region and twice being recognized as Sales Representative of the year in BC. And of course leading the Association as President from 2019-2021.
If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
Try and answer all of your questions before you join. There are so many Industry veterans who would be more than happy to discuss in detail what a career in the PGA of Canada entails. I see too many leave too soon because they just didn't have guidance...
What is your most cherished golf memory?
Anytime I can play with my parents and wife!
What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
Penticton G&CC, so many memories there it's just special every time I play!
What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
We play golf ALL THE TIME and never hit a bad shot...
