VANCOUVER, BC - It is with great pleasure and gratitude that PGA of BC and uniPHARM & Medicine Centre
Pharmacies Charitable Foundation announces Steve Darling as the official Ambassador of the 2012 PGA of BC
Golfathon for ALS. Darling, a major sports enthusiast and recreational golfer, is the Morning News Anchor at Global
BC TV News. Eager to aid in the fight against ALS, Darling is lending his voice and status to the cause, in order to
motivate people in communities throughout BC to donate and support the professional golfers raising funds for
ALS patient services.
ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disorder that can affect anyone at any time. ALS readily
attacks the neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. Those
diagnosed with ALS will experience overall weakness and eventually lose the ability to move muscles in their arms,
legs, mouth, throat, and elsewhere. A person diagnosed with ALS will typically be immobilized or deceased within
two to five years of their initial diagnosis.
This June 2012, marks the 7th year for the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS. Having Steve Darling on board as the
official Ambassador has enabled the production of a 30 second TV advertisement promoting the event. Both
Darling and the public’s participation will help raise funds for equipment, support, and patient services for those
living with ALS. Additionally, TEAM 1040/1410 of Vancouver is airing a 30 second radio advertisement with
Executive Director of PGA of BC, Donald Miyazaki, speaking on behalf of the month long event.
For those looking to get involved, the newly launched website for The 2012 PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS will offer
additional information as well as donation forms that can be filled out online www.golfathonforals.ca. Darling
encourages all to join him and the professional golfers to bring an end to the fight against ALS.
