After an opening round of 68 (-4), Kevin Maxwell of Olympic View Golf Club leads the 2014 Titleist/Footjoy PGA of British Columbia Championship presented by AXIS Insurance Managers. Bryn Parry of Seymour Creek Golf Centre sits second after a 70 (-2) at Vancouver's Point Grey Golf Club.
Maxwell's round included four straight birdies on the front nine, from the fourth hole thru the seventh. Known as a powerful player, his length off the tee allowed him to take advantage of short second shots and capitalize with solid putting.
"I hit the ball well today," Maxwell said "I gave myself a lot of chances, and was able to take a few of them."
No stranger to Point Grey, Maxwell's competitive summer schedule included an invitation to the PGA Tour Canada's PC Financial Open contested earlier this year at the same venue. The experience Maxwell gained at that event allowed him to climb the leaderboard quickly today.
Bryn Parry came into the PGA of BC Championship as a favourite after a win at the VGT's Chilliwack Open, a second place finish in the PGA of BC Assistants' Championship, and a Top 5 at the Sani Marc Canada Cup. A two-time champion of this event, Parry will be looking to notch a third win on the William Thompson trophy. Oliver Tubb, the reigning PGA of BC Assistant's Champion and another heavy favourite, is tied for 7th place after an opening 73.
Maxwell and Parry will play together in the final group, along with Gordy Scutt, also of Olympic View Golf Club. Scutt's opening 71 (-1) places him tied with past champion Dean Claggett of Kelowna's Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy.
Point Grey Golf & Country Club is one of Vancouver's most prestigious private clubs. The traditional tree-lined layout is no stranger to hosting big events, having previously hosted national opens for men and women.
Tee times for the two-day event begin at 11.00AM Tuesday - live scoring is available on pgabc.org or via Twitter by following @pgaofbc or the hashtag #pgabc.
