Thanks to back-to-back birdies on seventeen and eighteen, Salimah Mussani of Riverway Golf Course captured her first provincial win at the 2014 PGA of British Columbia Women’s Championship. The event was contested September 8th and 9th at Surrey’s Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club.

 

“It’s been a while since I competed – I missed it,” said Mussani “It felt good to get out there, and great to get the win.”

 

Mussani began the day two shots behind the overnight leader and 2012 champion, Ashley Zibrik from Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club. Mussani wasted no time during Tuesday’s front nine, posting a +1 39 which saw her take the lead with nine holes to play. The cushion would not last though, and Mussani would find herself tied with Zibrik with two holes remaining.

 

Drawing on her experience under pressure, Mussani would post birdies on her final two holes to seal the deal with a two-shot win.

 

Overnight leader Ashley Zibrik struggled on the front side, posting a front nine 43 to slip out of the lead. Solid play over the first half of the back nine saw her regain a share of the top spot on the seventeenth tee, but she could not match Mussani’s pace over the last two holes. Zibrik would finish alone in second place, two shots behind.

 

Another former champion, Hazelemere Golf & Tennis Club’s own Patty Jonas, would finish in solo third. Her 157 total would edge McCleery Golf Course’s Leila Harman by two for the last podium spot.

 

Since 1962, Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club has been one of the Lower Mainland’s top public facilities. From 2006 to 2008 Hazelmere hosted the Greater Vancouver Charity Classic, and acted as competitive host site for the 2010 BC Summer Games. The championship layout was lauded by all competitors as a fair test for the 2014 Women’s Championship.
