RICHMOND, BC (PGA of British Columbia) – A full field of golf professionals from all over British Columbia are set to make their way to Pitt Meadows Golf Club on Monday to compete in the 2022 PGA of BC Championship presented by Axis Insurance.
When registration for the 2022 PGA of BC championship schedule opened on April 1st, many tournaments sold out within days but none more quickly than the 99 positions available in the Association’s flagship event. Over the course of the next few months, the championship’s waiting list grew to over 50 participants, demonstrating its popularity within the membership.
Much of this year’s popularity and appetite to compete in this championship can be linked directly to the host venue, Pitt Meadows Golf Club.
The historic Club is no stranger to hosting an array of medal play championships, including their own Golden Ear’s Open taking place in July. Pitt Meadows Golf Club last hosted a PGA of BC provincial championship 30-years ago when they played host to the 1992 PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship, won by Lanny Sawchuk of Burnaby Mountain Golf Course.
The facility will be hosting the PGA of BC Championship for the first-time and the Club’s Head Professional, Wes Doka, states that he is excited to welcome members to his facility.
“We are proud of how the golf course is shaping up heading into the Championship and it should be in incredible shape for competitors. We are hosting our Club Championships the weekend leading into the event so we are looking forward to showcasing the facility when it will be at its finest”.
At the 2021 Championship hosted at Kamloops’ Rivershore Golf Links, Jake Scarrow of then Chilliwack Golf Club claimed the title and etched his name on the William Thompson trophy. His 8-under par total was helped in large part to a final round 7-under par 65 to edge Nate Ollis (Cordova Bay Golf Course) by one stroke. Scarrow now makes his home on Vancouver Island where he is employed as an Apprentice Professional at Victoria’s Gorge Vale Golf Club.
Current PGA of BC Order of Merit leader and 2022 PGA of BC Assistants’ champion, Zach Olson (Chilliwack Golf Club) came third in the 2021 and looks to continue his fine play this season as he eyes a valuable 50 order of merit points going to the winner. A win at Pitt Meadows will all but solidify himself as the PGA of BC’s player of the year.
This year’s PGA of BC Champion will earn $6,300, in addition to the top 50 players and ties cashing a piece of the $35,000 championship purse.
The Top 4 qualifying Club Professionals in this championship will be selected to represent the BC Zone in the Inter Zone matches at the PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada. The event takes place December 5-8 at Verrado Golf Club’s Victory Course in Buckeye, Arizona. Club Professionals are defined by members who are actively in the Head, Head Teaching or Executive Professional categories at the time of the championship.
