SCOTT RODGERS SHOOTS THREE-UNDER 70, WINS CPC AT SHAUGHNESSY

Meadow Gardens PGA of BC professional Scott Rodgers won his third PGA of BC title on Tuesday with a scintillating round of 70 on a tough Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club course to win the 2013 Cleveland Golf/Srixon Canada PGA of BC Club Pro Championship Presented by DSG TAG Systems.

Rodgers overcame a two-stroke deficit from Eaglecrest Golf Course (Qualicum Beach)'s Cory Betz with a four birdie, one bogey round.

Rodgers made birdies at holes 8, 13, 14 and 17 and his only blemish was a bogey on the par-five 11th.

"It feels pretty good because I played solid both days and hit it really well," said Rodgers. "I made a 35 footer on 13 and then the birdie at 17 was about 15 feet from off the fringe."

Rodgers, in his second year at Meadow Gardens, credits teaching colleague Brett Saunders with helping him hone his game and he said a portion of the $2,700 first prize will go toward improvements to their teaching studio.

Rodgers had previously won the 2003 PGA of BC Assistants' Championship and a Pro-Assistant title with Randy Smith.

Betz, who led for most of the final round - he had a four-stroke lead at one point - was undone by back-to-back bogeys at 8 and 9 and a crushing bogey at 17 which gave the lead to Rodgers for the first time. Betz, who shot rounds of 71 and 73, cashes a $2,000 second-place cheque out of the $15,000 total purse.

Coming in third place was Mountain View Golf Club's Jeff Wiggins, who shot rounds of 72 and 74 for an even-par 146 finish and the $1,500 third-place cheque.

Tying for fourth place were Two Eagles' Dean Claggett, Pt. Grey's Jeff Buder and Cordova Bay's Jim Goddard, who finished at +1, 147, and each cash cheques for $916.

Rodgers' victory capped a stunning two days at Shaughnessy, which included superintendent Rob Barr and his team getting the course into unbelievable playing conditions despite the early autumn monsoon rains. And on Monday night, longtime Shaughnessy head pro Jack McLaughlin was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. His family and many of his former students were on hand to honour one of Canada's finest teaching professionals.
