SUCCESSFUL EDUCATION SERIES EVENT AT VANCOUVER GOLF CLUB

More than 30 PGA of BC professionals spent a beautiful winter Monday at the Vancouver Golf Club learning about Golf-Related Injuries, What is Perfect Practice? and The Institute of Heartmath.

Education Series Event No. 1 included informative talks by PGA of BC members Caolan Teasdale, Doug Hastie and Randy Smith, along with a roundtable discussion featuring PGA of BC members Keri Moffat, Doug Morgan, Lenny Cyr and John Randle.

Event Moderator Mark Strong led a lively discussion which saw many of the participants posing questions to the presenters and roundtable.

Dr. Caolan Teasdale led off the seminar with his talk on Golf related Injuries: A systematic review & treatment interventions

Teasdale hit on four major points:

1. Review the major golf related injuries and how they pertain to performance (where, when, why and how)
2. Golf injuries related to the teaching professional
3. Select case studies and interventions to reach maximal recovery
4. Preventative techniques for golf related injuries

Teasdale was followed by Doug Hastie, whose talk was on What is Perfect Practice?

Popular books such as "The Talent Code", "Outliers" and "Bounce" have brought to the mainstream many topics that should have an effect on how sports are taught and coached.  What can we learn from the research?  Does it fit into how golf is currently taught and coached?  Hastie's presentation  include these topics plus information on these four topics:

- Research on myelin and physical habits
- Does the ten thousand hour rule apply to golf?
- Developing practice plans for different levels of players vs. fixed mindset as it relates to talent
- Quality practice, what does it look like?

After lunch, host professional Randy Smith led a discussion on Managing Emotions for Peak Performance in Sport & Life

Smith led a discussion which outlined the studies of The Institute of Heartmath. The science behind Heartmath continues to unlock the secrets of the connection between the Heart and the Brain. This synergy greatly influences everything we do. There are ways/techniques that can be applied which serve to elevate and maximise one's performance state for any activity we do including sports.

The event concluded with Strong leading a very interesting discussion about multiple issues in the golf industry. Randle, Moffat, Morgan and Cyr were able to share their thoughts with the crowd on issues such as the difference between teaching and coaching, ways to market your teaching services and the future of the golf teaching industry.

After the event, the discussions continued at the Lougheed Highway location of Sammy J's, a Preferred Partner of the PGA of BC,

The next PGA of BC Education Series event is on Feb. 5 at the Victoria Golf Club. For event info and to register, please click here
