The PGA of BC regrets to inform its members and industry partners there will be no Trade Show this year.
We arrived at this point after a long period of discussion and negotiation with the Canadian Golf Industry Association (CGIA). In spite of an agreement between our two associations to partner in a merchandise show for 2012 - signed after meeting attendance objectives for last year's show - the CGIA recently informed us they will not honour this commitment. Your Board of Directors is disappointed with the CGIA's decision and the impact it will have on our association, as we worked diligently to maintain a viable merchandise buying show. (A listing of CGIA member companies is provided below).
Cancelling this year's Trade Show will result in an estimated shortfall to our budget of $100,000 and affects the way we operate as an association. We will need to draw from cash reserves to cover this loss of revenue. The PGA of BC will continue to maintain tight control over its expenses and focus on maximizing sponsorship sales in the short term, with no immediate cuts to programs in place for the balance of 2012.
For the longer term the Board of Directors is reviewing services and programs and positioning for possible changes in 2013. In order to keep dues as reasonable as possible and still achieve a balanced budget, we will need to consider adjusting select events and services to best meet our standards of value and member expectations. We will be stepping up our efforts to enhance our programs and generate new revenue streams. Input in this area from our members would be highly valued.
The Board would like to thank Tracey Lipp-Derrheim for her many years of outstanding service as our Trade Show Manager. We also recognize and support the excellent efforts of our Executive Director, Donald Miyazaki, and our office team consisting of Grant Gray (Sales Manager), Chris Currie (Communications & Membership Manager), Bryan McNair (Events Manager) and Jack Croucher (Tournament & Rules Advisor).
The Board will be consulting regularly in the months ahead to map out the best path forward and will make a concerted effort to inform and involve members throughout this process. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact myself or any of the Board members, or send us your comments by email to: donald@pgabc.org
These are challenging times for golf professionals and our industry in general, and we need to think, plan and adapt in new ways - both as individuals and as an association.
On behalf of the Board of Directors,
Derek Thornley
President
PGA of BC

The buying process for some facilities has already begun. It is our understanding that CGIA companies intend to have sales representatives visit all accounts in B.C. We also anticipate that some companies will work independently and some will work together to create small regional showrooms. The PGA of BC will not be involved in these activities at this time.
