Three players withstood the elements and their nerves to pass their PGA of BC Playing Ability Test at Hazelmere on July 31 and Aug. 1.

Big Sky Golf & Country Club's Shawn Keough shot rounds of 75 and 78 to handily beat the 156 score needed to pass the test. The 21-year-old Newfoundland native had the help of caddy Michael MacNeil, who helped Keough navigate the final three holes in even par, including a birdie at 16.

"I probably felt comfortable after the birdie at 16," said Keough. "I knew I had a couple of shots to play with and I am happy I've passed this test."

Keough's playing partner on the second day, Takaya Driving Range's Jimmy An, also made it through, shooting rounds of 78 and 78 to make it on the number. But An's round was nothing if not spectacular, especially in its finale.

An, resting on the number while on the 17th tee, hit a 7-iron into the water and then made a nice up-and-down for a round-saving bogey. Needing birdie on the last, An had 175 yards uphill before ripping a four-hybrid to three feet. An then made the putt and hugged Keough in celebration.

"I couldn't be happier," said An. "I knew I had to make birdie and that was one of my best shots all day."

Ueki, representing the Canadian Sports Business Academy, shot an opening round 79 and then a closing 77 to make the passing grade by two shots.

Ueki, originally from Kanagawa, Japan, played steady golf and said the key to her success was gradual improvement on all aspects of her game.

The three successful applicants now become Candidates for Membership with the PGA of BC.
