Summerland’s Greg Machtaler is having a summer to remember.
Machtaler scorched the course and the field at the 2013 Canada Cup in Victoriaville, QU with weekend rounds of 63 and 63 to beat fellow PGA of BC pro Dave Zibrik by six strokes.
Machtaler finished at -21, after rounds of 69, 72, 63 and 63. He cashes the $30,000 winner’s cheque, which wouldn’t have been possible if not for a member at the Summerland Golf & Country Club, who offered to fly Machtaler out on frequent flyer miles and caddy for him at the tournament
Seymour Creek’s Zibrik, who shot 66-68-67 to lead after all three rounds, finished with an even-par 72 in his final round to finish solo second and cash a cheque for $18,000.
Zibrik was in awe of the golf Machtaler was playing: “I’ve got the best seat in the house for this show.”
Machtaler and Zibrik played in the final group with another BC player, Chilliwack’s Brad Clapp, who finished in a tie for third with Quebec’s Eric Laporte at -13, eight strokes behind Machtaler. Clapp cashes a cheque for $11,750.
Two-time defending champion Bryn Parry of Seymour Creek finished tied for fifth with Quebec’s Yanik Laforest, another stroke back at -12, and cashes a cheque for $7,000.
Rounding out the BC domination at the event is Shaughnessy’s Lindsay Bernakevitch, who shot a closing round 68 to finish at -9 and a seventh-place finish, which was good for a $5,250 cheque.
Machtaler has also won the PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship in Chilliwack in June and the PGA of BC Pro-Assistants’ Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon in July with Tyrel Babkirk.
These sterling performances mean that the PGA of BC Championship, to be contested at the Salmon Arm Golf Club on Aug. 19 and 20, promises to be a marquee affair, as Clapp is the defending champion, and Machtaler, Parry, Bernakevitch and Zibrik all seem to be in top form.
Of the 11 BC players to go out to Victoriaville to play the tournament, eight made the cut.
Kyle German finished at -2, Myles Johnson E and Lenny Cyr +4. Missing the cut were Shingo Akizuki, Norm Jarvis and Russ Latimer.
