The 2020 golf season brought a new set of obstacles for golf facilities to navigate. Those working in golf operations were tasked with ensuring the health and safety of their patrons and adhering to policies set forth by health authorities, as well as responding to an increased demand for the game. With COVID-19 remaining a reality for the 2021 golf season as well, our panel will provide perspectives on how they've managed these challenges at their facilities, and examine some of the initiatives that began as a response to the pandemic that may continue once public-health circumstances return to normal
About the Panelists
Steve Haggard has more than 20 years' experience as a PGA of BC member, having spent a number of years working in the Vancouver Island, Interior and Kootenay regions. He has served as The Springs at Radium's Executive Professional since 2018 and was the Kootenay & Northern BC's Regional Recipient of the 2020 Executive Professional of the Year Award. Haggard was also a Regional Recipient of the Coach of the Year Award in 2016.
Bill Kelly's career as a PGA member began in Australia, but he's spent the past 15 years as a highly-respected Club Professional at Vancovuer Island facilities. He recently completed his first full season as General Manager at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community, which received the PGA of BC's 2020 Golf Facility of the Year Award, while Kelly himself was selected as the Provincial Recipient of the Cec Ferguson Executive Professional of the Year Award. He is also a two-time PGA of BC champion, capturing the 2006 Club Professional Championship and 2011 Tournament of Champions.
Drew Scollon is a 15-year member of the PGA of Canada, beginning his career in the Alberta zone not long after graduating from the University of Calgary with a kinesiology degree. Since 2009, he has been a mainstay on the Professional staff at Point Grey Golf & Country Club, playing a key role in the club's day-to-day golf operations. A testament to his dedication to the PGA of BC, Scollon has been a Top 100 Golf Professional every year since the Professional Development Program was introduced in 2013.
Since joining the PGA of BC more than a decade ago, Greg Pool has honed his craft as a Golf Professional at some of the Lower Mainland's most prestigious facilities. He is a two-time Provincial Recipient of the PGA of BC's Fred Wood Class "A" Professional of the Year Award and was also selected as the PGA of Canada's Stan Leonard Class "A" Professional of the Year in 2018. He has since assumed the role of Head Professional at Northview Golf & Country Club.
