RICHMOND, BC (PGA of British Columbia) - The PGA of BC Women's Championship is open to all female members within the Association. The event has been contested mostly as a 36-hole stroke-play event over the years since its 1994 debut, with some championships determined via the results of women competing in the PGA of BC Championship, but since 2018 has been determined by stableford scoring over 36 holes.
The PGA of British Columbia conducts multiple championship tournaments each season, providing an opportunity for our Golf Professionals to compete against their colleagues in a variety of settings and formats. These championships have provided countless memorable moments and produced many deserving champions over the years, and we are proud to recognize their accomplishments.
The Women’s Championship debut in 1994 had Head Professional Maureen Bruce (Fraser Glen Golf Course win at Kelowna Golf & Country Club. Over the 28-year history of the championship, the tournament has seen multiple repeat winners and incredibly skilled golfers from tour professionals to collegiate athletes. Repeat winners of the event include Maureen Bruce, Salimah Mussani (RIverway Golf Course), Jennifer Greggain (Bear Mountain), Ashley Zibrik (Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club), Leila Harman (Morgan Creek Golf Course), Patty Jonas (Saskatoon Golf and Country Club), Shiella Cowan (lago Golf Academy). Leila Harman is the most winning member of the PGA of BC Women's Championship with four victories at the event followed by Jennifer Greggain with three victories.
“I think this good mix of these young up-and-comers with (longer-tenured) players like myself, Jen, Ashley and Leila … shows how BC has been able to attract and inspire the next generation,” Salimah Mussani said. “We’re in a great place.”
The lowest recorded round in the history of the event belongs to Patty Jonas in 2000 with a 2-round score of 5-under 139. Since the stableford format was introduced in 2018, Christine Wong holds the highest score of 80 par points for her victory at Richmond Country Club in 2020.
“Our province and our Association is made up of so many amazing female players and my dream was to one day be one of the women who’s won this event,” said Wong, who made her third start in the tournament.
This years Women's Championship will make its return to Victoria Golf Club in September. Female professionals can sign up here for the event.
