RICHMOND, BC (PGA of British Columbia) - Dexim Golfwear is a Canadian and family founded and owned company based out of Quebec who have made women’s golfwear for over 30 years. Their golfwear is specific to women and is designed and manufactured entirely in Canada at competitive prices. The company has made over 1 million garments throughout their time in the industry and have done extensive market research to find what women want on the golf course.
With how little the sport of golf has changed over it’s existence there has been one very noticeable change, clothing, specifically women’s clothing. Women playing golf in the 19th century wore clothing that was the opposite of light and comfortable. During this time women weren’t allowed to play the sport competitively and the Victorian dresses they played in had crinolines, bustles and petticoats beneath them and wore heels on the course. Women were playing in golf matches as early as 1895 and it wasn’t until 1940 when FootJoy came out with women’s golf shoes.
Thankfully the state of golf fashion for women has come along way since the early 90’s. There are now many brands with full women’s lines that have professional styled polo shirts, skorts, dresses, pants and footwear suitable for the golf course and beyond. Some focus’ when designing and manufacturing golf apparel is comfort, breathability, convenience, and affordability.
“The fabric has evolved. Everything has spandex in it now. Everything we sell has 94-92% Polyester and 6-8% spandex. The blend is light and breathable and will never crease so you can pull it out of your suitcase and put it on right away.” said Pierre Doyon, President of Dexim Golfwear.
Golf clothing is not always versatile but that’s one of the many focuses of golf apparel brand Dexim. Dexim Golfwear’s clothing is suitable for an evening out with friends, good for a vacation, going on a cruise and professional environments. The company prepares a new style for each season so women can stay fresh for every time of year.
Doyon says the dresses are really starting to become popular. “Many golf stores are just buying dresses now. The feedback is that the one-piece dress design versus the two-piece polo shirt and skort is more affordable and suits more environments.”
The golfwear company has surveyed many women throughout the golf industry and one thing that stuck out to them was pockets. Lots of women’s sports wear doesn’t include pockets which on the golf course everyone knows to be useful. Dexim’s skorts and dresses include convenient pockets for women to utilize on the course.
Ordering material and getting garments ready for the next year while staying up to date can be a challenging task. You must think a year ahead for what styles will be popular and do this while the world is constantly evolving.
Designer, Danielle Gouin from Dexim is constantly seeking out designs that will appreciate their customers. "Thanks to the evolution of technology, our suppliers of fabrics and accessories, offer us materials with always avant-garde designs so I design the clothes and I make my selection of fabrics thinking of our lady golfers. I like to offer mixes of materials and patterns that are both modern and traditional to create a look that will seduce golfers." She believes, "the clothes offered in the future will have a more modern look approaching ready-to-wear but while retaining their technicality and caring about environmental issues to protect the planet."
The company sells to more than 400 golf courses from coast to coast in Canada. In the last year, overseas shipping problems and cost became a greater concern for almost everyone in the golf industry. Being made in Canada is a huge advantage for customers as it ensures Dexim delivers their orders on time and always complete.
