RICHMOND, BC (PGA of BC) - The 2023 PGA of BC Assistants' & Seniors' Championships, presented by Rolo Golf & Replay Golf Supplies, get underway Monday, June 19 and Tuesday, June 20 at the spectacular Chilliwack Golf Club.
The charming Fraser Valley track will serve as host to 120 PGA of BC professionals from across the province, our largest field in history. We are proud to offer a 25 percent increase to our purse, along with prizing courtesy of Maui Jim. Professionals will compete in the Assistants' Championship or the Seniors' Championship, for competitors 50 years and over. Chilliwack Golf Club will be welcoming the Assistants' & Seniors' Championships back to their course after hosting the events ten years ago.
Last year, Chilliwack's Zach Olson was the Assistants' champion at Sandpiper Golf Course where he defeated Modern Golf's Cory Renfrew in a playoff. Olson will look to repeat as defending champion at his home course. He said that he is not feeling any added pressure, and instead embraces the familiar advantage.
"My mentality hasn't changed much. I'm just going to get out there and play golf like I can. I know the course is scoreable, and I'm looking forward to playing my home track," said Olson.
Olson carries over an impressive tournament run, having also won last year's Pro-Assistant Championship alongside Chilliwack's Head Professional Ryan Tofani and securing several top finishes on the Lower Mainland G&G Tour. He was named last year's PGA of BC Stan Leonard Player of the Year.
Along with Olson and last year's runner-up Renfrew, other top competitors from recent years include Tower Ranch Golf Club's Keith Martin, McCleery Golf Course's Andrew Rasmussen and this week's PGA Championship of Canada winner Kevin Stinson (Cheam Mountain Golf Course).
Doug Morgan (Richmond Country Club), is seeking his third Seniors' Championship. A winner in 2017 at Salmon Arm Golf Club and in 2022 at Sandpiper Golf Course, Morgan is the front-runner heading into this season's competition.
"There is a lot of opportunity for great scores over the first half of the course, so I'll look to be aggressive there," said Morgan. "I've made some adjustments to my game since last year, and am excited to see how they translate in the tournament."
Four-time PGA of BC Championship winner Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) is making his first appearance in the Seniors' Championship and is seen as a potential victor. Kelowna Golf & Country Club's Rob Anderson was the 2021 champion and can be counted among the favourites as he looks to add his second Seniors' title.
Chilliwack Head Professional Tofani said he looks forward to showing off his staff's hard work and the natural beauty of the course.
"Our greens are running great, and it's an honour to showcase our club to the competitors. Our Superintendent Kaleb Fisher has worked really hard to get the course into awesome condition."
The Assistants' and Seniors' Championships are proudly presented by Rolo Golf & Replay Golf Supplies. The PGA of BC is grateful for Rolo's and Replay's generous support.
