TOPIC: What to Expect When Interviewing With a Selection Committee at a Private Club

BIO: Kirk has a 27 year professional relationship with private clubs and their management and governance, managing at three of the nation’s top year historic clubs – The Country Club, Chevy Chase Club and The Los Angeles Country Club. Kirk is a member of the National Club Association's Board of Directors and a past NCA Chairman. Kirk has also served the Club Managers Association of America (“CMAA”) in a number of capacities including serving on the Board of directors of the National Capital, Southern California and New England chapters. He also has served on a number of CMAA national committees, including most recently the Long Range Planning Committee and served as Host of the International Wine Society. Kirk graduated cum laude from the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. He earned his certified club manager (CCM) designation in 1993.

TOPIC: Educating our current and future golf professionals - A review of our industry's current position, leadership and management practices to advance the profession, and education necessary to close the gap between current professional competencies and those needed for success in our evolving industry. A review of UNLV efforts to advance golf management education will also be shared

BIO: Following a 10 year career in the golf and club management industry, Dr. Christopher Cain received his Ph.D. in Higher Education with a focus on Education Leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Dr. Cain earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Pennsylvania State University.  His teachings, invited presentations and research focus on facility management (club and golf), leadership, and general management learning objectives as well as student persistence factors related to degree attainment. Doug Hastie, PGA of Canada, Bear Mountain Golf Resort, Down to Earth Golf

TOPIC: What to Teach - The Big Decision

  • Do you have a "system" to decide where to start with a new student?
  • Does the skill level of the player have anything to do with your decision?
  • How do you break down the technical skills of golf?
  • Is there a "model" swing?

BIO: Doug began his golf career at The National Golf Club of Canada where he was mentored by George Knudsen and Ben Kern, both highly regarded players and teachers and members of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. He spent 13 years at The National, leading the instruction and junior programs before he left in 1994. Before moving west, Doug spent two years teaching with Mark Evershed, developing his skills in knowledge in communication of golf skills. Doug then led very successful golf academies at Westwood Plateau G.C., and Musqueam G.C. before coming to Vancouver Island in 2009 to manage Highland Pacific Golf Course. In 2015 Doug came back to his first love, teaching the game, and took the position of Director of Instruction at Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Academy.

In 2002 Doug took a “side job” as a facilitator for the PGA of Canada’s Teaching and Certification Program. He continues to facilitate “teach the teacher” seminars for the PGA and also serves as a Master Facilitator for the West Coast. He loves to learn and pass that learning on to his peers and students.

Doug has taught golf for over 24 years. His focus is on customizing the lesson based on the students’ needs and goals and making sure they are set up for success. He looks forward to sharing his passion and knowledge and helping everyone have an enjoyable experience on the practice tee and golf course.

Matthew Pritchard, Principal, Expense Reduction Analysts

BIO:  Matt Pritchard is a Principal with Expense Reduction Analysts (ERA) in the Vancouver and Lower Mainland Region of British Columbia, Canada.

Matt coordinates the efforts of ERA’s team of category specialists to deliver consistent expense management improvements for clients. Matt’s understanding of the ERA 10 Step process empowers him to successfully coordinate simultaneous expense reduction engagements.

Prior to joining Expense Reduction Analysts, Matt held several leadership roles within BC Hydro, Cummins-Westport Inc., Honeywell and Ford Motor Company and has gained over 20 years of expertise within Supply Chain, Business Development, Process Improvement, Fleet Asset Management and Automotive Engineering.

Matt’s formal education includes an BEng(Hons) in Engineering with Environment Studies and has successfully delivered several Six Sigma projects.

Matt’s leadership consistently led to exponential increases in revenues, profits and market share.
