PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- Aug. 5, 2021

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
My dad, Dan, was a PGA of Canada Professional for a number of years. He really helped me with golf growing up and then when I became old enough to see what went into being a PGA of Canada Professional, I knew I wanted to make a career out of it.

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
I think the most rewarding part is being able to have access to so much information about the industry and coaching, as well as being able to connect with other pros from across the province and bounce ideas off each other to try and make all programs better.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
I started at The Okanagan Golf Club and the Head Professional was Lee Ranger.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
My dad and family of course have had the biggest impact in my career, always being behind me and supporting every decision I’ve made. Lee Ranger as well; he helped me get into the industry as I worked for him for eight years, starting in the back shop and working my way up.

What career path led you to where you are today?
Just being involved has led me to where I am today. Getting out playing tournaments and attending in-person seminars has been the biggest push to meet new and fellow Professionals within our great organization.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
Being selected as the Interior Region's 2020 Apprentice Professional of the Year.

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
To any new member, the biggest piece of advice would be get involved. Go play tournaments and go to the Spring Seminar and other Education Series events. There are tons of amazing pros out there to meet and that’s where you will find them.

What is your most cherished golf memory?
Winning a Father/Son tournament with my dad or winning my first golf tournament as an individual.

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
Favourite course is Salmon Arm Golf Club. I love the layout and design and it is nice and tree-lined, so it makes for a peaceful round of golf.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
Generally it’s just explaining to them that we are not the guys on TV, but what the everyday life of a Golf Professional is: growing the game, making sure our pro shops are stocked up and our courses are running smoothly to ensure the best experience possible.
