PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- June 23, 2021

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
I became a PGA of Canada Professional because I love the sport and coming to work rarely feels like work! In my early 20s I was spending almost five days a week at the golf course anyways, so it was a no-brainer when I started thinking about the PGA of Canada as a career opportunity.

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
It's always great to see new junior golfers at the course, and especially rewarding when you see developing players hit shots they never dreamed of hitting!

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
My first job in the golf industry was actually right here at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. I started in 2014 as a golf shop attendant and at that time both Peter Smith and Jeremy Johnson were the Executive and Head Professionals at this facility.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Both Peter Smith and Jeremy Johnson would be the biggest influencers on my career thus far. If they had not put the bug in my ear and guided me through the process of joining the PGA of Canada, I don't think I would be where I am today!

What career path led you to where you are today?
I worked a lot of customer-service oriented jobs in my youth and I think that set me up to tie together my love of sport and my service experience.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
In my short career I was proud of passing my two-day PAT on my first attempt. As a latecomer to the sport and industry I am proud of just being where I am now as an Apprentice Professional!

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
Spend some time learning all the different ways our association can support your progression. Attend the education series, webinars, and tee talks - its a great way to learn more about our industry, start to get to know others, and have them get to know you!

What is your most cherished golf memory?
There is a picture of me on the tee box of No. 15 at The Rise Golf Course in Vernon that I will probably never forget! A great round of golf with some great friends that hadn't all been together in several years.

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
I'd have to say Tobiano. I played it last year with some good friends and the views/memories will stick with me for a long while.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
A common misconception is that all we do is play and teach golf when in reality we don't play nearly as much as we would like!
