PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- Jan. 26, 2022

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
For the love of the game. I wanted to be a part of the industry where I’m surrounded by like-minded individuals that love the game just as much as I do and with those that are actively looking to improve (ex. inclusive) the game. Just wanted to share the love!

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
The rewards for being a member have been greater than I have ever anticipated. Having the words “PGA of BC” follow my name on my credentials have allowed me to gain access to the world that I couldn’t have imagined. It led me to travel the world and work with some of the great coaches and players from the four corners of the world including Singapore, Thailand, Korea, China, England and UAE. During those years that I spent abroad, I met my wife with whom we have two beautiful children.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
Riverside Golf Centre, Calgary AB. Jeff Lubin was the Head PGA Professional

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Craig Rencher, HP at Cedar Hill GC, Victoria BC. Craig allowed me to have the freedom to pursuit my international coaching ambition while providing a stable home base that I can always come back to.

What career path led you to where you are today?
Computer proficiency and my early adoption of social media, believe it or not, has been a major factor in where I am today. In the early days of Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, I was quite involved in the online discussion of the golf industry. My activities were caught on by a recruitment company in England and that lead me to a coaching job in Dubai.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
There is no better accomplishment, as a coach, than to see success in players that you work with. I have been lucky to be part of some of those journeys including working with the current junior National Champion and the former #1-ranked amateur player in Korea. I am also proud to have worked with Emirates Golf Federation to head the effort in creating UAE’s first Special Olympics National Team to compete in 2019 Abu Dhabi Special Olympics.

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
Career in golf is not limited to simply working at a golf course. Expand your horizons and you will find many interesting opportunities.

What is your most cherished golf memory?
While on the course at the Els Club, looking back and realizing that it’s Rory McIlroy and Will Smith playing in the group behind me. Also, watching Donald Trump cold top his drive 80 yards and turning to the media to claim it was 280 down the middle…

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
Bear Mountain Resort. Challenging. Scenic. Nicklaus. Enough said.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
That I get to golf every day. Truth is that I can’t remember the last time I played 18 holes of golf.

What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?
I’m a music nerd and a band geek. I own and play most of band instruments including flute, clarinet, sax, violin, etc…
