PGA of BC Professional Spotlight -- Nov. 24, 2021

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
Mostly because I'm passionate about golf and felt that sharing that passion with others would make for a fun and rewarding career.

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
Being able to travel the province to play at world-class facilities and build camaraderie with my peers at the same time.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
Royal Ottawa Golf Club, Paul Carrothers.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Paul Carrothers was a huge influence for my career, mostly because he encouraged me to continually learn and take advantage of growth opportunities. We had a great team at ROGC in my early years as a professional. Jeff Corcoran and Andrew Donaldson were the Associate pros at the time and they were also a wealth a knowledge for me as I learned about the industry.

What career path led you to where you are today?
I started as an Assistant, then Associate, at Royal Ottawa Golf Club. I then moved to Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, working under Jeremy Johnson. I later moved to Kamloops G&CC and worked for Brice MacDermott as the HP. I became the GM at Kamloops in 2019 when the position became available.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
Winning the PGA of BC Pro-Assistant in 2019 at Copper Point Golf Club! I played that golf course a bunch when I lived in the East Kootenays so it was extra special to play well and win that event.

If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
Be curious and open to new ideas, and continually learn along the way.

What is your most cherished golf memory?
It's a tie...I have two....1) Making my first hole-in-one when I was 14. My foursome was my Dad, my Uncle and my Cousin. I was in such a state of shock that I took my putter to the green with me (forgetting my ball was in the hole). 2) Turning 12 and being allowed to play the main course at Hamilton G&CC where my grandpa was a member (you had to be at least 12 to play the "big course"). That is still the most nervous I've ever been on the first tee.

What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
That's tough, there are so many good ones! Capilano if I have to pick one.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
I'll copy Nathan Grieve's answer here....people thinking that once the golf course closes for the winter we stop working.
